class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tokunaka Bunko<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Statement of Purpose<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom, the islands of Okinawa have nurtured a rich and distinctive artistic heritage, including textile arts, ceramics, lacquerware, calligraphy, painting, and architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through centuries of cultural exchange with China, mainland Japan, and Southeast Asia, the people of the Ryukyu Islands absorbed foreign traditions and techniques with their own unique sensibilities, creating an aesthetic that is distinctly Ryukyuan\u2014neither wholly Chinese nor Japanese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Ryukyuan textiles, ceramics, and lacquerware continue to be widely appreciated today, the tradition of Ryukyuan calligraphy has gradually faded from public awareness. Yet these works preserve the learning, spirit, aesthetic ideals, and history of those who came before us. Sadly, many have been dispersed or lost with the passage of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tokunaka Bunko is dedicated to collecting, restoring, preserving, and making publicly accessible historical materials, with a particular focus on the calligraphic heritage of the Ryukyu Islands. It is our hope that these works may once again be seen, studied, and appreciated, allowing their cultural significance to be rediscovered by future generations. Nothing would bring us greater satisfaction than seeing these treasures regain the recognition they deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okinawa is also home to a wealth of intangible cultural heritage, including court performing arts, folk performing arts,&nbsp;<em>Ryuka<\/em>&nbsp;poetry, and&nbsp;<em>Shimakutuba<\/em>&nbsp;(the Okinawan language). While our foundation rests upon the preservation and public presentation of tangible cultural materials, Tokunaka Bunko also aspires to learn from, promote, and help pass on these invaluable intangible traditions to future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTokunaka\u201d (<em>T\u016bkun\u0101k\u0101<\/em>) is the traditional Okinawan family house name that has been handed down through my family. In many parts of Okinawa, such house names have long served as an important means of identifying families and households, sometimes carrying greater significance in daily life than surnames themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naming this collection after our family house name is, in itself, a modest effort to preserve and share this unique aspect of Okinawan regional culture with generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Passing on the cultural heritage entrusted to us, to the generations yet to come.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
